Antarctica: German South Atlantic Expedition 1925-27: Real photographic picture postcard to South West Africa showing the “Meteor”, written on May 13 1926 in approach to St. Helena from where sent the next day franked 1d., additionally cancelled on arrival by Swakopmund June 4 c.d.s., the card conveying a message of thanks written and signed by Lt. Commander Bender. The German South Atlantic Expedition had been commissioned to explore theories including that of Prof. Alfred Merz that gold and silver might be present in the South Atlantic in commercially viable quantities, and was covering Profile 6 of its survey departing Swakopmund on Apr. 30. In June Merz was hospitalised at the German Hospital in Buenos Airesb and died of pneumonia on August 1926. Waldemar Bender (1885-1926) was replaced as First Officer by Lt. Cdr.
