Antarctica: Ellsworth Trans-Antarctic Flight Expedition 1933-34: Expedition envelope endorsed “Per Monterey” from Bernt Balchen to his wife in Norway, sent from Dunedin Nov. 11 1933 on outward journey bearing New Zealand 2d. (2) with Oslo Dec. 16 machine arrival on reverse. A rare commercial item from the first Ellsworth attempt, carried on the S.S. “Monterey” to the U.S. for onward transmission. Ex Harry Evans. Antarctica: Ellsworth Trans-Antarctic Flight Expeditions 1933-36: Incoming airmail envelope from Canada addressed c/o the Norwegian Consul in ValparaÃso, to Patrick Howard, “Lincoln Ellsworth Trans-Antarctic Flight Expedition/On Board M.S. Wyatt Earp/Arriving Valparaiso about March 5th”, sent from Toronto Feb. 14 1935 franked 20c., 50c. and with arrival backstamp. The Howard Nunataks, lying off the Sentinel Range in Antarctica were discovered by Lincoln Ellsworth on his Trans-Antarctic flight of Nov. 23, 1935, and were named for Patrick Howard, an engine mechanic on the expedition.
