Antarctica: Ellsworth Trans-Antarctic Flight Expedition 1933-34: Envelope with enclosed two page letter headed “Ross Havet 15 Januar 1934”, typed and signed by pilot Bernt Balchen to his wife, Emmy, in Norway, the message describing the frustration of the expedition’s plans due to the sudden break-up of the ice in the Bay of Whales and subsequent damage to the plane “Polar Star”. Sent from Dunedin Jan. 31 franked New Zealand 21/2d., with enclosed pencil sketch of the deck of the vessel signed by Balchen and dated Aug. 9 1933 with further signed message on reverse.
