Antarctica: British, Australian, New Zealand Research Expedition 1929-31: Envelope to Sir Edgeworth David at Sydney University, bearing Australia K.G.V Head 2d. cancelled by fine strike of “B.A.N.Z./1930 (penguin) -31/ANTARCTIC RESEARCH EXP.” cachet, and fascinating enclosed four page letter dated “14.XII/30” on expedition stationery from the S.Y. “Discovery”, written by medical officer and biologist William W. Ingram, mentioning a coaling supply from the “Sir James Clark Ross” the next day, that would allow the party to “send a few letters cancelled with our new stamp” and reports on the visit to Macquarie Island and the state of the crew, including the ship’s carpenter, Williams, who has turned out to be “an old shell shock case” and is being sent back in a whaler. Sir Tannatt William Edgeworth David (1858-1934) had been a member of Shackleton’s 1907-09 expedition during which he had led the first ascent of Mount Erebus and reached the South Magnetic Pole. Dr. William Wilson Ingram (1888-1982) was described by Mawson as “an ideal medical officer” who also manifested “physical endurance and a full measure of camaraderie”. Ex Harry Evans. Photo.
