Antarctica: British National Expedition 1901-04: First Relief Expedition, Discovery expedition envelope (flap missing) addressed to Hertfordshire in the hand of Lt. Reginald Skelton, bearing New Zealand 1d. Universal cancelled by Lyttelton Mar. 25 1903 squared circle, the day of the arrival of the “Morning” in Lyttelton, showing expedition label at left with “DISCOVERY” added below in manuscript, backstamped Hitchin May 4 arrival. B.P.A. certificate (2010). Sir Reginald William Skelton KCB CBE DSO (1872-1956) served as chief engineer and official photographer for the expedition, later becoming Vice Admiral and Engineer-in-Chief of the Fleet at the Admiralty from 1928 to 1932. Universal strip of three endorsed “Via San Francisco” with May 9 arrival on reverse. Ex Harry Evans. Sir Clements Markham, former President of the Royal Geographical Society, was the principal organiser of the National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-04 and launched Scott’s Polar career. Photo.
