Antarctica: British Expedition 1910-13: Autograph four page letter on “Terra Nova” expedition stationery headed “Ross Sea/Antarctic/2/1/11” written by meteorologist George Simpson, mentioning the first sighting of Mount Erebus and “Tomorrow we expect to be in sight of winter quarters ... We are all full of hope and are looking forward to the new life which will commence as soon as we land.” Enclosed in expedition envelope addressed to Derbyshire franked Victoria Land 1d. cancelled by Jan. 19 1911 base canceller two days after the shore parties were able to move into their new building. Also printed cautionery slip, annotated by Simpson on reverse, warning the recipient not to divulge any information received nor publish any photographs. Ex Harry Evans. Sir George Clarke Simpson (1878-1965), nicknamed “Sunny Jim” constructed one of the continent's first weather stations, conducting balloon experiments to test the atmosphere and determine how altitude affects temperature. at the base camp at Cape Evans, which was under his command for several months whilst Scott and his party lmade their attempt on the Pole. The British Antarctic Survey's Ice and Climate Building in Halley Bay is known as The Simpson Platform, in his memory. Photo. (Image1)

Drake, bearing Victoria Land 1d. tied by neat Feb. 9 1911 c.d.s. Also an unused example of the card. Kinsey, in Christchurch, most unusually showing King Edward VII Land cancelled Mar. 4 1909, closing date of the first Antarctic post office, Victoria Land 1d. cancelled Mar. 3 1912, opening day of the post office at Cape Evans, again carried on the “Aurora” to the Antarctic with “LOOSE SHIP’S LETTER/POSTED IN/ANTARCTICA/(penguin)/S.Y. AURORA/A.A.E.”, signed by Capt. John King Davis with straight line “COMMANDER OF SHIP.” and bearing Australia 1d. kangaroo cancelled in Hobart on Mar. 17 1912, the cover lastly showing further Victoria Land 1d. cancelled Feb. 4 1913, the “Terra Nova” then en route to New Zealand (this date only known on ‘Kinsey’ items), vertical fold clear of adhesives but a remarkable item carried on no fewer than four trips to the Antarctic. Antarctica: British Antarctic Expedition 1910-13: Envelope addressed by Lieutenant Teddy Evans to members of the Radcliffe family, major contributors to the expedition, in Cardiff franked at 1/2oz.-1oz. rate by Victoria Land 1d. pair tied by Expedition “JA 18/13” c.d.s’s at Cape Evans, roughly opened and partly repaired. Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell, 1st Baron Mountevans (1880-1957), was second-in-command of the expedition and captain of the “Terra Nova”. He accompanied Scott to within 160 miles of the Pole, but became seriously ill and survived only through the refusal of his comrades to abandon him. Having spent the summer and autumn of 1912 recuperating and fundraising, Evans returned to New Zealand and arrived back at the Cape named by Scott in his honour aboard the “Terra Nova” on this day. Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell, 1st Baron Mountevans (1880-1957), was second-in-command of the expedition and captain of the “Terra Nova”. He accompanied Scott to within 160 miles of the Pole, but became seriously ill and survived only through the refusal of his comrades to abandon him. After hearing of Scott’s death Evans assumed command of the expedition and arranged the final departure from the continent. Photo. (Image1)
