Antarctica: Australasian Expedition 1911-14: Picture postcard of the S.Y. “Aurora” sent by Bellgrave Ninnis with short message headed “Antarctic Jan 7th 1912” to London, carried on the “Aurora”, franked by Tasmania 1d. Pictorial cancelled by Hobart Mar. 12 1912 c.d.s. with “LOOSE SHIP’S LETTER/POSTED IN/ANTARCTICA/ (penguin)/S.Y. AURORA/A.A.E.” cachet below. Ex Harry Evans. Lt. Bellgrave E.S. Ninnis of the Royal Fusiliers, was a surveyor and one of two expedition members in charge of the Greenland dogs. On Nov. 10 Ninnis left as one of the three man ‘Far Eastern’ sledging party toward Victoria Land led by Mawson and on Dec. 4 he, his sledge and dog team vanished into a crevasse. Wharton MA-1. Photo.
