1948 Israel: Service Suspended (by non-belligerent

Israel
Sale No: 6
Lot No:1036
Symbol:

Israel. 1948 US "service suspended" mail to Palestine: 22 MAR 1948 surface mail postcard form from University of Maryland COLLEGE PARK to Hebrew University JERUSALEM, franked 3c & tied by local machine cancel; posted 5 days before the 27 March US surface-mail suspension to Palestine but still marked by New York Post Office with violet 2-line "Surface Mail Suspended | Return to Sender" instructional marking handstamp K-Type-1 & returned to sender. Given the long period between dispatch and refusal of service between 2 close locations (Maryland/New York) this may be a slow-processed "first day" suspended-mail postal item due to uncertainty & affected by the suspension + marked by this instructional marking (or may even precede known earliest date of such handling - but with no additional transit marks as proving dates this cannot be determined here).
