Hospital Ship "Kanowna". 1916 Stampless O.A.S covers to G.B with violet straight line "H.M. A.H.S Kanowna", or oval "No... AUSTRALIAN HOSPITAL SHIP / KANOWNA" with London Received From H.M Ship machine. Also two postcards of the ship. (4).

Postcards. Real Photo postcards (20) and other cards (4) of various Australian Transport ships, including card of T.S.S "Themistocles" with 7th Inf. Bde. Field P.O c.d.s and card of T.S.S "Bettana" with I.E.F "E" censor cachet, a card of T.S.S "Ceramic" with pictures of the King and Australian flap and map on reverse. Also booklet "The Wiltshire Mail. Souvenir of the voyage of the H.M.A.T "Wiltshire", Feb. 7th 1917 - April 11th 1917", and cards of H.M.A.S "Sydney" or S.M.S "Emden" (2). A good group. (28).

Patriotic Cards/Official Stationery. 1915-17 Stampless postcard headed "Australian European Expeditionary Force, 1914-15, Souvenir" with an Australian map and flag below, violet "PASSED", oval "T 1d" with a 1d due stamp; 1917 stampless postcard "For King and Empire, Y.M.C.A of Perth (Western Australia) Field Service Department" depicting crossed flags and soldiers with semaphore flags, with violet "A.I.F / Passed by Censor No.....", Bombay c.d.s (Feb 28) and "PAQUEBOT"; and 1917 O.A.S lettercard printed by staff of the Commonwealth Stamp Printing Office "for gratuitous distribution among the men at the front" with violet "PASSED BY CENSOR" and "A.I.F FORCES POSTAGE FREE / VIC" c.d.s (Oct 1). (3).

1914 Stampless cover and postcard to Australia both with "1ST AUST. INF. BDE FIELD P.O." c.d.s applied at sea, the cover with 24 Oct. c.d.s and "1d" charge mark, the card with 24 Nov c.d.s, the interesting message including "the Sydney, one of our escort sank the Emden & her collier the other day only 18 miles away". Also a cover with the same c.d.s of 17 Dec. used just after the troops arrival in Egypt. (3).

S.S "Star of Victoria". 1915 Picture postcards depicting a Commonwealth & Dominion Line ship, or Aden (2), all from the same sender to Victoria with violet straight line "A.I.F PASSED CENSOR 16", one with a c.d.s of Stratford (May 12) and boxed "MISSENT TO / STRATFORD". S.S "Clan MacGillivray"/"Mashobra". 1915 Stampless card and a cover franked Egypt 5m on the front and Australia 1d on the reverse, both with "ON ACTIVE SERVICE" and "A.I.F / PASSED CENSOR 46" applied on the "Clan MacGillivray", the card with the cachet overstruck by Port Said c.d.s, the cover with both stamps cancelled by the censor cachets, B.A.P.O Z c.d.s of Port Said on the front; and a stampless Egypt card with violet "A.I.F / Passed by Censor / 47" of the "Mashobra", Fremantle arrival machine on front. S.S "Demosthenes". 1915 Stampless postcards of the ship (3, all with the ship's name cut out by the censor), all with large violet "A.I.F PASSED / CENSOR, 64". c.1915 Stampless O.A.S covers and cards with censor cachets incorporating the transport number, comprising "A.I.F / PASSED CENSOR" numbered 26 ("Armdale", A.I.F Base P.O Cairo c.d.s), 42 ("Boorara", also a card of the ship), 48 ("Seeang Bee") or A49 ("Seeang Choon", cachet possibly unrecorded?), and a Melbourne Y.M.C.A card with violet "A.I.F / Passed by Censor No. 54" used on S.S "Runic", all fine, a scarce group. (6).

c.1914-15 Stampless P.O.W envelopes from the "Ivernia", "Saxonia" or "Royal Edward" all anchored off Southend, or from "Ascania" at Portsmouth, all with "POST FREE / P.C. / PRISONERS OF WAR", fine. (4).

Hospital Ship "Maheno". 1915 Stampless picture postcards of South Australia with violet boxed "N.Z Expeditionary Forces. / No. 1 HOSPITAL SHIP" dated 19 Jul. 1915 or 1 Sep 1915, and a similar card of Albany, Western Australia, with violet "ON ACTIVE SERVICE / N.Z. HOSPITAL SHIP / "MAHENO"" and red "PASSED BY CENSOR". Also two pre-war cards of the ship. (3).

Hospital Ship "Maheno". 1916-17 Stampless O.A.S cards from Egypt with blue boxed "N.Z. Expeditionary Forces / No. 1. HOSPITAL SHIP" dated 30 JUN 1916 or 23 FEB 1917, and "ON ACTIVE SERVICE / N.Z. HOSPITAL SHIP / "MAHENO"", the first with "RECEIVED FROM H.M SHIP / NO CHARGE TO BE RAISED" applied in G.B, the second on a card of Bombay with A.P.O SZ27 skeleton c.d.s of Port Said. Hospital Ship "Maheno". 1916-18 Stampless O.A.S cards and a front posted in G.B, the two stampless cards with blue boxed "N.Z. Expeditionary Forces / No. 1 HOSPITAL SHIP" dated 27 JUL. 1916 or 25 SEP. 1916 (partial strike) and "PASSED BY CENSOR" in red or blue, and black "RECEIVED FROM H.M SHIP / NO CHARGE TO BE RAISED", one also with a barred circle naval security cancel; and 1918 (Apr 22) printed "N.Z Expeditionary Forces / No. 1 Hospital Ship" O.H.M.S envelope front posted from Cardiff Bute Docks to the Director of N.Z Medical Services in London franked 1d, the rare "H.S. MAHENO / N.Z" c.d.s applied below, with blue "PASSED BY CENSOR" and "..... COLONEL N.Z.M.C / O.C Troops H.M.N.Z. Hospital Ship Maheno" (signed "R. Gray-Inglis, possibly the only recorded example of this cachet), a little stained. Three unusual items from the ship in British waters. (3)

Hospital Ship "Marama". 1918 (June 28) Stampless picture postcard of Albany, Western Australia, with "H.S MARA(MA) / N.Z" c.d.s and violet oval "N.Z. No.2 HOSPITAL SHIP / PASSED BY CENSOR / "MARAMA"". Very scarce, just six examples of this c.d.s recorded in a 2003 article by John Woolfe and A. Dove. Photo on Page 106. (Image1)

Hospital Ship "Marama". 1916 Stampless picture postcards, one a card of the ship written from England, another card of Dublin written from Cowes Roads, all with boxed "ON ACTIVE SERVICE / N.Z. Hospital Ship / "MARAMA"" in black, the two cards from G.B also with oval "N.Z. No. 2 HOSPITAL SHIP / PASSED BY CENSOR / "MARAMA"" in black and "RECEIVED FROM H.M SHIP / NO CHARGE TO BE RAISED", the other card with red "PASSED BY CENSOR ...." and Base A.P.O c.d.s., all fine. Also a card of the ship. (4).

Hospital Ship "Marama". 1916 Stampless postcards with boxed "ON ACTIVE SERVICE / N.Z. Hospital Ship / "MARAMA"" in red (2) or black (2), three with "PASSED BY CENSOR ....", datestamps of N.Z Advanced Base A.P.O at Alexandria (2), Base A.P.O X (Salonica) or Z (Port Said), all fine. Also a postcard of the hospital ship. (5).

1914 Stampless cover to Ireland endorsed "On Active Service, 13/306 Trooper J. Cleland, 4th Waikato Mounted Rifles, N.Z Expeditionary Force" with blue oval "N.Z MILITARY POST OFFICE / TROOPSHIP No. 8 / OCT 22 1914 / EXPEDITIONARY FORCE", a Hobart c.d.s and "10 / CTMS / T" in red, posted on the "Star of India", with a postcard of the ship. Also a stampless Ceylon postcard with similar oval handstamp of Troopship No. 12 in violet, dated NOV 23 1914, used on the "Waimena". The only two troopships to use this oval type datestamp, the first very unusual. (3). Photo on Page 106. (Image1)

1914 Stampless filing card (circular hole at base, produced as such prior to use), used as a postcard to Scotland with superb violet oval "N.Z MILITARY POST OFFICE / TROOPSHIP No. 8 / DEC 1 1914 / EXPEDITIONARY FORCE" applied on "Star of India"; stampless Ceylon postcard with similar oval handstamp of Troopship No. 12 in violet, dated Nov 25 1914, used on the "Waimena"; and a postcard bearing Egypt 4m tied by this violet oval datestamp with "Troopship No. 12" excised, strangely dated "SAT 9 1915", recorded used by the N.Z Mounted Brigade F.P.O at Zeitoun for just 15 days (5-19 Jan, 1915). The first with vertical fold and corner fold to second, otherwise fine, a scarce group. (3).

1914-15 Stampless postcards of Tasmania or Ceylon (3) posted on troopships carrying the first or second reinforcement expeditionary forces, with violet boxed "N.Z MILITARY POST OFFICE / EXPEDITIONARY FORCE" with the date erased (2), "N.Z MILITARY POST OFFICE / DEC 21 1914 / FIRST REINFORCEMENT / EXPEDITIONARY FORCE" (used on the "Willochra") or "COMMANDER'S OFFICE / 22 JAN 1915 / H.M.N.Z.T. No 13" (used on the "Verdala"), minor soiling to last, otherwise fine and scarce. (4).

1915 Stampless Ceylon postcard posted on the "Willochra" with violet boxed "N.Z MILITARY POST OFFICE / JAN 21 1915 / REINFORCEMENT / EXPEDITIONARY FORCE", the word "Second" excised from the handstamp, used for just one week from January 21st, as few as three examples known, not recorded by Proud and very scarce. 1915 Stampless covers (2) and postcards (2) with violet or blue boxed "N.Z MILITARY POST OFFICE" datestamps for "THIRD REINFORCEMENT / EXPEDITIONARY FORCE" (FEB 25 1915, not seen by Proud), "FOURTH REINFORCEMENT / EXPEDITIONARY FORCE" (MAY 20 1915, Aden backstamp), "EXPEDITIONARY FORCE / FIFTH REINFORCEMENT" (JUL 16 1915), used on "Tahiti") or "EXPEDITIONARY FORCE / SIXTH REINFORCEMENTS" (AUG 22 1915, "Willochra" or "Tofua"). A few faults, all handstamps fine, a scarce group. (4).

Andania. 1915 Piece bearing the circular cachet "H.M.T "ANDANIA" / RYDE / 20 FEB 1915 / PRISONERS OF WAR", and a stampless cover from Germany to a P.O.W on the ship with Post Free P.C cachet. Also cards of the ship (4), three posted on board in 1915 when in use as a troopship. The only recorded example of the "Andania" cachet. (2+).

Andania & "Ascania". 1914-15 Covers and cards comprising 1914 postcard from Chingford to a P.O.W on "Ascania" at Portsmouth Harbour with scarce oval "COMMANDANT'S OFFICE / PORTSMOUTH / HANTS / 11 DEC. 1914 / PRISONERS OF WAR, H.M.T "ASCANIA""; P.O.W envelope from "Ascania" with red "PASSED CENSOR" and Ryde c.d.s; German parcel card, cover from Germany and a G.B postcard to the "Ascania", German cover to the "Andania" (redirected to Dorchester), covers and a card from the "Andania" (2) or "Ascania" (2) and a stampless card from a P.O.W about to be moved to Jersey simply written from Ryde, these nine all with circular Post Free P.C cachets; also picture postcards of the ships (4). A good lot, the "Ascania" cachet scarce. (11+).

Ascania. 1914-15 Long stampless O.H.M.S covers, one with a Gosport c.d.s and violet oval "COMMANDANT'S OFFICE / PORTSMOUTH / HANTS / 28 DEC 1914 / PRISONERS OF WAR H.M.T "ASCANIA""; the other with a Ryde c.d.s and similar oval "COMMANDANT'S OFFICE / RYDE / 26 MAR 1915 / PRISONERS OF WAR H.M.T "ASCANIA"", the first a little toned, vertical folds, otherwise fine, a scarce pair.
