1881 (May 5) Six page letter written and signed by Mons. Daniel Comboni, Bishop and Apostolical Vicar of the Diocese of Central Africa, on printed "VICARIATUS APOSTOLICUS / Africae Centralis" notepaper, written in English from El-Obeid, to Carl Geigler, Director of Posts and Telegraphs in the Sudan. The letter concerns a report written by Father Don Leon on the slave trade in Gebel Nuba, that fell into the hands of Consul Harisal who passed it over to his Consul in Egypt; the report was published in a German newspaper creating difficulties for the Catholic authorities. An interesting and early letter sent within the Sudan, no envelope or address.

1896 Campaign. 1896 (Nov 28) Stampless cover endorsed "no stamp available" from Lt. Gore Anley to his mother at Cook & Son, Cairo, redirected to the Ghezira Palace Hotel, with "WADI-HALFA / CAMP", "POST OFFICE / CAIRO / COOKS TOURIST SERVICE" (Dec 4) and Cairo datestamps, boxed "T", a 1pi postage due stamp applied. The enclosed letter of Nov 15th includes "None of our things which we left at Nosheh depot have turned up yet so we only have the very limited supply of kit which we had with us for the rapid advance to Dongola. We are in a very ragged condition, the men are literally in a state of rags. The men are picking up wonderfully well, they were dreadful wrecks when we crawled into this place". 1898 Campaign - Battle of Omdurman. 1898 (Sep 9) 1pi Soudan overprint "Enveloppe - Lettre" posted from Atbara to India, backstamped at Wadi Halfa and in India. The enclosed letter written at Omdurman on Sept.5th, just three days after the battle, the very good content including "Had a great day on Monday & successfully bust up the Dervishes. None of us knocked over although some had some narrow squeaks. One of my chaps was shot a foot in front of me & two within a few yards. The return has already begun, the Warwicks leaving today.... we are to get 2 medals, one from home & one from gippy govt.... I was in charge of the D. prisoners, most unhealthy here, all dead animals. We killed about 6000 Dervishes & took 1000 prisoners. Khalifa got away". A few minor stains, an interesting letter.
