Interpostal Seals. 1868-90 Seals for Berbar (2), Chaka (2), Dara, Dongola (4), El Kalabat, Fazoglu, Kalkal, Kassala (2), Kartoum (4), Suakin (5) or Wadi Halfa (4), various colours, types and spelling. (27).

1897-1999 Mainly used collection in an album including 1935 Gordon set, 1935 Air 2½pi on 5m missing Arabic letter on piece, Army Service stamps with S.G A3, A12, etc. Also a stockbook of duplicates, and a few 1948-56 F.D.Cs. S.G. £1,000+. (100s).

1881 (May 5) Six page letter written and signed by Mons. Daniel Comboni, Bishop and Apostolical Vicar of the Diocese of Central Africa, on printed "VICARIATUS APOSTOLICUS / Africae Centralis" notepaper, written in English from El-Obeid, to Carl Geigler, Director of Posts and Telegraphs in the Sudan. The letter concerns a report written by Father Don Leon on the slave trade in Gebel Nuba, that fell into the hands of Consul Harisal who passed it over to his Consul in Egypt; the report was published in a German newspaper creating difficulties for the Catholic authorities. An interesting and early letter sent within the Sudan, no envelope or address.

1885 Campaign. 1885 (Mar 16) Cover franked ½d + 1d (2) from London to "J.P Dalison, The Queens Own Regt (50th), Nile Expeditionary Field Force, Korti, Egypt" with Cairo backstamp, letter enclosed. Also an 1886 front from Wadi Halfa to G.B bearing Egypt 20pa, paying the soldier's concession rate, faults. (2).

1885 Campaign. 1885 (May 12) Egypt 20pa postcard (Egyptian Gazette subscription reminder) from Alexandria to "Major Genl. Lyon-Fremantle, Souakin", backstamped at Cairo and "SUAKIN" (May 18), redirected to London with superb "BRITISH ARMY POST OFFICE / EGYPT" c.d.s code "A" (May 19) on the front. Lyon-Fremantle had been in command of the garrison at Souakin. Light vertical fold, otherwise very fine and unusual. Photo on Page 206.. (Image1)

1896 Campaign. 1896 (July) India 1a Soldiers & Seamen's Envelopes from Souakin to India with "BASE OFFICE / B" datestamps, both endorsed from Indian soldiers and countersigned, one torn upon opening at left edge, the other fine. (2).

1896 Campaign. 1896 (Sep 25) India 1a Soldiers and Seaman's Envelope addressed in Arabic script, sent from Souakin to Tokar, with "BASE OFFICE / B" c.d.s and scarce "No. 1 / FIELD P.O" backstamp, not countersigned. A very unusual use of this envelope within Sudan. Photo on Page 206. (Image1)

1896 Campaign. 1896 (Nov 28) Stampless cover endorsed "no stamp available" from Lt. Gore Anley to his mother at Cook & Son, Cairo, redirected to the Ghezira Palace Hotel, with "WADI-HALFA / CAMP", "POST OFFICE / CAIRO / COOKS TOURIST SERVICE" (Dec 4) and Cairo datestamps, boxed "T", a 1pi postage due stamp applied. The enclosed letter of Nov 15th includes "None of our things which we left at Nosheh depot have turned up yet so we only have the very limited supply of kit which we had with us for the rapid advance to Dongola. We are in a very ragged condition, the men are literally in a state of rags. The men are picking up wonderfully well, they were dreadful wrecks when we crawled into this place". 1898 Campaign. 1898 (Jan 8) Cover franked G.B 2½d from Oswestry to "Major A.E Sandbach R.E, Egyptian Army, c/o Messrs T. Cook & Sons, Cairo", redirected to Halfa, six transit and arrival datestamps including "POST OFFICE / CAIRO / COOKS TOURIST SERVICE" (16/17 Jan), "HALFA" (Jan. 25) and "MEROWI" (Feb. 3), unusual. Also 1898 (Feb 20) Egypt cover with Guerga-Assouan T.P.O c.d.s, to "Major Sandbach, Egyptian Army, Merowi", backstamped at Assouan, Halfa and Merowi. (2).

1898 Campaign - Battle of Omdurman. 1898 (Sep 9) 1pi Soudan overprint "Enveloppe - Lettre" posted from Atbara to India, backstamped at Wadi Halfa and in India. The enclosed letter written at Omdurman on Sept.5th, just three days after the battle, the very good content including "Had a great day on Monday & successfully bust up the Dervishes. None of us knocked over although some had some narrow squeaks. One of my chaps was shot a foot in front of me & two within a few yards. The return has already begun, the Warwicks leaving today.... we are to get 2 medals, one from home & one from gippy govt.... I was in charge of the D. prisoners, most unhealthy here, all dead animals. We killed about 6000 Dervishes & took 1000 prisoners. Khalifa got away". A few minor stains, an interesting letter.

1898 Campaign. 1898 Covers endorsed "Nile Expeditionary Force", the first from Darmali (May 26) addressed to Gibraltar franked 2m + 3m + 5m; the second from Atbara (Aug 26) franked at the 5m soldiers concession rate, headed "From 1/C S. Sgt R. Cowan, R.A.M.C". The Atbara cover with light horizontal fold, the Darmali cover fine and unusual to Gibraltar. (2). Photo on Page 206. (Image1)

1898-1905 Covers, military correspondences including 1898 cover from Atbara, 1899 covers from Omdurman (2, one with "IX Sudanese" crest), Stallard correspondence covers from El Obeid (3) and Norbury correspondence covers from Halfaya (2) or Khartoum North (2), also a 1906 cover from Egypt to Lt. Strange, Royal Berks Regiment, Khartoum. (12).

1898-1900 Soudan overprint 5c envelopes, the first to "Captain F. Gore Anley, Senior Staff Officer, Suakin, Red Sea" with unusual first type "BERBER" double ring c.d.s (piece torn from upper edge); the 1900 cover from Wad Medani to Beni Souef with scarce "HALFAYEH" star and crescent c.d.s on reverse, front with old tape stain at left edge, otherwise fine. (2).

1899-1946 Covers and cards to or from Sudan including 1899 cover from Cairo to Omdurman with Wadi Halfa Camp arrival c.d.s; 1900 cover and 1908 card with Sudan stamps tied by differing Paquebot handstamps of Suez; 1910 cover addressed by Slatin to Captain Prinz Fritz Liechtenstein in London; 1926 cover to China; 1936 cover from Sweden to Gore, Abyssinia, returned with "UNCLAIMED" handstamp and Khartoum Returned Letter Office c.d.s; Port Sudan Paquebots (4); Khedival Mail Line cancels (2); ingoing covers with Sudan postage due stamps (3), etc. Also 1906 registered letter Certificates of Posting with Halfa c.d.s (3). An interesting lot, all of merit. (24).

1899-1954 Covers and cards (c.270) and many stamps and pieces, many of these written up on pages for their cancels, including registered mail, air mails, etc. (270+).

1901-20 Covers all addressed abroad comprising 1901 Soudan overprint 5m envelope franked 5m to Portugal and 1pi envelope franked 10m registered to Angola, both from Sawakin; 1902 cover from Gedaref to Turkey; 1904 cover from Sawakin to the Austrian Post Office in Beyrouth; 1905 4m on 5m postcard from Sawakin to H.M.S "Barossa", Cape Squadron; 1907 registered cover franked 2pi from Halfa to Constantinople; 1908 2m wrapper to Uganda; 1913 5m envelope from Kodok to Zomba and redirected to Jubaland with Egypt, Nyasaland and KUT backstamps; 1920 5m envelope from Nasser to British Army of the Rhine redirected to "No 37 C.C.S, Danzig Plebiscite Area". An unusual group. (9).

1903-15 Covers and cards, cancels comprising 1903 Shendi on much redirected cover with twelve backstamps, 1906 Tonj and Meshra-El-Rek datestamps, also Number Six Sudan (2), Kodok and Atbara Station. (7).

1907 East Africa & Uganda ½a postcard to USA, the stamp disallowed with a White Nile T.P.O c.d.s alongside, due handstamps applied in London and USA, 1c + 3c dues applied in San Francisco, corner crease, an unusual card possibly from the Lado Enclave. 1919-50 Covers with single ring skeleton datestamps comprising "MALAKAL / POST OFFICE" (1919), "SUAKIN / POST OFFICE" (1923), "KHARTOUM D" (1938), "TURABI POSTAL AGENCY" (1948) and "WAU" (1950), "EL DAMER / POST OFFICE" on 1926 part cover from G.B, and "SHENDI" on 1927 front. Also 1943-48 covers (3) and two 1951 pieces cancelled at Gambeila, the Sudanese enclave located within Ethiopia. (12).

1954-c.2000 Covers and cards, many cancels written up on pages, a large accumulation with registered mail, cachets on undelivered mail, etc. (100s).

Cancellations. 1897-1937 Stamps (49) and pieces (14) with selected cancels including 1897 Kedden and Okacha datestamps (both with C. Hass Certificates, only one or two examples of each recorded), 1897 manuscript cancels of Debbeh on Egypt 5m strip of three or 1pi, Army Telegraphs datestamps (8), datestamps of Zabad with Arabic date, Goz Abu Goma, Sobat, etc. (63). Postal Agencies. 1947-91 Covers (74) and pieces (49) all with rubber type Postal Agency datestamps, many in violet, some registered, the majority philatelic though some clearly commercial. A scarce group, most on pages. (123).

T.P.Os. 1905-77 Covers and cards (90), with railway or steamer T.P.O datestamps, both cancels and backstamps, some registered, one 1935 cover with a Haiya Gedaref T.P.O registration label altered in manuscript for use at Wadi Halfa, also further cancels on stamps or pieces, several skeletons noted, some philatelic. (90+).

World War One. 1915-19 Covers and cards (14) and fronts (3) with Sudan censor cachets, 1917 cover from Suakin censored in India, and a card from Asmara censored in Italy. Also 1916 1pi envelope cut-out with scarce "Field Post Office / 1 / Sudan" skeleton c.d.s, and six 1934-37 covers or cards with army cachets. (26).
