Newfoundland/Nova Scotia. 1805-16 Correspondence to, from or concerning Ensign (later Lieut.) Roderick Matheson of the Nova Scotia Regt, mainly to Newfoundland, comprising 1805 related letter sent at the 1d soldiers rate from Colchester to Inverness; 1810 letters sent to Scotland including news of his appointment sent from the Isle of Wight Army Depot, order to report to the Depot, and letters from the Isle of Wight to Scotland (11); 1810 letter from Matheson to his parents written "on board the Regules" off Portsmouth, departing for Newfoundland; 1810 letter from Capt. Chisholm "on board H.M.S Jason" to the Isle of Wight; 1810 letter from Capt. Chisholm at St. John's to the Isle of Wight but forwarded to Newfoundland, endorsed "Returned for Postage", with oval "Ship Letter" handstamp; 1810-13 letters from Scotland to St. John's (4, one with red "Falmouth" and missent endorsement); 1810-11 hand carried letters from Capt. Chisholm, addressed locally or to Burine (5); 1814 hand delivered letter from an officer in France, sent via London, contents mention a French officer handing letters to the British sentries for prisoners of war; 1813 letter from Guadeloupe to St. John's, Halifax backstamp but no postal rate; 1813-15 letters from St John's or Pictou (3, Ship Letters including fine oval "Pool" mark); 1815 letters posted in Scotland concerning the effects of Lt. Matheson, who had died at Quebec (5). An interesting correspondence, very mixed quality, many very soiled or with other faults but some fine, some good contents, including capture of the "Chesapeake" by H.M.S "Shannon", capture of H.M.S "Macedonia" by a U.S Frigate with the captured colours laid at the feet of Madison, etc. (36).
