Nevada Adhesive Revenue Stamp Group 1, 4c Red Collection [143722] Nevada Adhesive Revenue Stamp Group, 4c Red Collection. This is an important study group[ from a major adhesive revenue collection from the 4c red stamp. The reader is immediately referred to Michael Mahler's Stamp Taxes in Nevada, Adhesive Revenue stamps of NV 1865-1873 published online or available through the Author. This books is unmistakably the quintessential reference work on Nevada revenue stamps and is the product of more than 40 years of a collection and research passion by Mahler. This passion, unfortunately is shared by Mr. Holabird. When I (FH) began to look at this collection, there was so much that I wanted to do in terms of splitting it out to offer to different collectors that is became overwhelming. With help from Mr. Mahler we decided to keep some of the study groups together because it offers a unique opportunity never seen before. In example this lot of 4c stamps is multiples of the total number previously known off document. Mahler's immediate comment was "Oh! The documents! Imagine what we can't see since these stamps have been removed off original documents." I (FH) have the same comment. This is a flabbergasting collection of about 167 4c adhesive revenue stamps. These stamps have a catalog value alone of well in excess of $10,000. Varieties include cancellation dates, mining companies, banks, from different cities such as Carson, Goldhill, Virginia City. They also include varieties such as imperforated and roulette varieties. This is a remarkable group. State:Nevada. $3,000-5,000 (Image)

Helena, LH Hershfield RN Check w/Extremely Rare William Ralston signature [144478] The check is a nice revenue imprinted L. H. Hershfield & Bro. of Helena. Dated 1870. Signed by W. C. Ralston on reverse. In the early 1860s, Lewis Hershfield journeyed with a team of oxen from Leavenworth, Kansas to Central City, Colorado. In Colorado, Hershfield collected 26 wagons full of dry goods. He drove this collection of goods through Colorado and Utah and settled in Virginia City, Montana in 1864. He found success among the miners of Virginia City. In addition to his dry goods store, he established a bank, storing gold as well as exchanging gold dust for money. This check finds its way to the Bank of California and William Chapman Ralston. Ralston was a San Franciscan businessman and financier, and was the founder of the Bank of California. With riches derived from Nevada's Comstock Lode, he became one of the richest and most powerful men in California. He founded the Bank of California and was known for having a nothing-is-impossible attitude. City:San Francisco, State:California, Date:1870 $200-400 (Image)
