Symbol:Cat No:36B

1859, 12¢ Washington, black, plate III (Scott 36B), a rare horizontal block of 6, positions 66-68/76-78L3, with an extra vertical ruled line between subjects at right, well centered, with deep color, o.g., hinge remnants and reinforced perfs; a couple of spots of missing gum and possibly slight thin in two stamps, otherwise Fine to Very Fine, this is the largest block from the left pane of plate 3 recorded by Allen. Cataloged as a block and pair without the variety,

The panes of the 12¢ 1857 that were discovered in remainders returned from Southern post offices, were sold to Ferdinand Trifet in 1878 and evidently were mostly right panes from plate 3, and almost all had the gum removed because they were stuck together. This block is exceptional because it comes from the left pane and also because it has original gum. The double frameline and extra ruled line varieties are found only on the left pane. The ruled line between columns 7 and 8 is often confused with an interpane centerline
