Lot No:1090

1851-52: Missionaries, Typeset 5 c. blue on pelure greyish paper, type I with 'P' located mid-way under 'H', a used adhesive with large even margins all round, heavily restored as can be seen in the majority of these delicate adhesives, cancelled by indistinct part strike of "HONOLULU / HAWAIIAN ISLANDS" datestamp in red, rarely seen on the stamp itself. An attractive example of this classical rarity. Cert. Hawaiian Philatelic Society (1979) Scott = $ 35'000.rnNote: In the most complete census of Missionaries, compiled in the auction catalogue of the Siegel sale 769, the first part of the Honolulu Advertiser collection, a total of 37 examples of the 5 c. blue are described. As the present item, 26 of them are defective or repaired, as can be expected for a stamp of 170 years on this extremely fragile pelure paper. The most frequently encountered cancellations are from the so-called cork killer group, while red circular date stamps are primarily seen on cover alongside the adhesive.
