1831 (September 12) Folded lettersheet with dateline "Rupert's House 12th Sept 1831" from Richard Hardisty, Chief Factor, Cheapside, London, England - letter reads in part:

"An Indian arrived here from Moose by whom I received 3 letters, I am directed to send him off back again this afternoon."

Routed via Moose Factory HBC on their annual supply ship to England, where letter entered mail at Deal handstamped Deal Ship Letter, rated "1/4" stg (to collect) for postage to London; clear NO 14 1831 arrival CDS on back. Minor ageing but a rare origin - Rupert's House being a remote (east of James Bay) outpost, HBC's oldest trading post.

England to Red River Settlement Lot of nine covers (three have no content or dates) originating from the UK between May 1840 and June 1851 to Rev. John Smithurst, Red River Settlement. Except for one cover (British postage stamp excised) rated "2/" mailed from Wirksworth, via H.B. House, London with rare "RR" script, all were carried by HBC free of charge on supply ship to York Factory, then by HBC canoe to Red River Settlement. Also one cover mailed from Middle Church (January 289, 1852) to Smithurst's address in London plus a damaged cover mailed within UK to same addressee. Reverend John Smithurst correspondence - a wonderful lot of 12 internal covers addressed to him at Indian Settlement, Red River Settlement, carried by Hudson's Bay Company from various locations in Rupert's Land / Red River Settlement. From earliest to latest (according to dateline) - York Factory June 1844, Cedar Lake June 1845, York Factory August 1846, unknown origin July 1847, two letters from Alex Christie at Lower Fort Garry May 1849 (one to Mrs. Jenny Hickenburger), Riviere du Pas January 1849, Cumberland Station January 1849, Grand Rapids September 1849, Norway House September 1849, Middle Church (likely 1850), Partridge Crop March 1851.
