Arad's fortress, built between 1763-83, served as the Hungarian rebels' headquarters during the latter part of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, and it was from Arad that Lajos Kossuth issued his famous proclamation of Aug. 11, 1849. The town's population in 1900 (the earliest records we could locate) was 53,903.

This cover was discovered in a family correspondence in 1997 and originally auctioned in June 1998, where it realized $23,000 including buyer's premium.
