WISCONSIN: "Fort Winnebago Nov 26th 1837" territorial period dateline on a folded letter addressed to Geneva NY, ms "25" rate and a small "due 2", some light aging, Fine and scarce; letter mentions "We are about 100 miles from the nearest white settlement, such as dreary place as you can imagine..There are three young ladies besides myself in the garrison".; accompanied by some background material from the Wisconsin Historical SocietyrnThe writer of the letter is believed to be Frances A. Mann, sister of the wife of Randolph Marcy, a Lt at the fort at the time (serving in the Black Hawk War) but who would later become Brig. General after a long Army career. (Image)
