1934 Piccard Stratosphere Balloon Flight Cover, Canadian private air mail stationery with hand-inked cachet "Stratosphere Flight Sep 27, 1934 / Dr & Mrs Jean Piccard. Detroit. Mich" (though the flight itself took place nearly a month later) Greenfield, Mich Oct 13 1934 machine cancel plus another partial Michigan duplex ties US 2c Grand Canyon, 6c Globe (oxidized), signed on back by Jeanette Piccard and husband Jean Piccard with note below signatures: "Landed at Cadiz Ohio", Fine and rare;rnJeannette Piccard was the first licensed female balloon pilot in the U.S., the first woman to fly to the stratosphere and, by some accounts, the first woman in space. Accompanied by her husband, Jean—a member of the Piccard family of balloonists and the twin brother of Auguste Piccard—she reached a height of 10.9 miles (17.5 km) during this record-breaking flight over Lake Erie on October 23, 1934, retaining control of the balloon for the entire flight.rn (Image)
