United States -- Two 1946 PanAmerican Test Flight Covers On one day only, November 1, 1946, collectors and other interested parties were invited to test the speed and efficiency of the new, cheaper airmail service in cooperation with Pan Am Airways by sending covers to the Pan Am offices in 28 Latin American and Caribbean cities at the new 10c rate which took effect that day. Officials in the various Pan Am offices would mark the date the covers were received (generally with a dated handstamp), apply local postage to the front of the cover (at Pan Am's expense), mark the cover "Return to Sender" and hand the cover back to the local post office for airmail transmission back to the sender in the United States. This was an opportunity for the sender to receive documented proof of the rapid turn-around time for airmail service, and marked a milestone in the rapid development in post-war air transport. Because of short notice, not many covers were serviced. (Image1)

Massachusetts -- Gloucester (Sandy Bay) lot of 23 stampless folded letters to family of Dr. John Manning Dr. John Manning, of Ipswich, joined the American army at the age of 17 as surgeon's mate. Afterwards he practiced in Chester, N. H., and then moved to Gloucester Harbor about 1786. In 1798, he moved to Sandy Bay. He added commerce and agriculture to his resume; but the ample estate he acquired came principally from his distinguished medical practice. He was an ardent Federalist, and was frequently elected a representative by his party. The letters are primarily to Dr. Manning from Hiram Hayes, his property manager. They are long and extremely detailed regarding the activities at the farm including crop yields, stealing sand from the shore to the farm to build up areas, potential for new forms of income from the land. A letter from Aaron Cogswell says that Hayes has approached him about purchasing a pasture and he is willing to sell. There are also letters to Elizabeth Manning. Those are from relatives and contain interesting passages about travel and meeting young men. The value is in the great historic content regarding this prominent citizen of Sandy Bay. Most postmarks are very light, partial or faded out but are from Gloucester, Salem and Ipswich. (Image1)

New Hampshire.United States - postal history
New Hampshire -- West Rumney and other communities lot of 28 stampless folded letters Outstanding mid-1800s grouping of 28 stampless folded letters among members of the family of Kendall Osgood, first postmaster of Rumney New Hampshire. 19 letters are from Kendall Osgood and have West Rumney manuscript postmarks. Of significance is that the balance are letters from his sons, William, Knight and Augustus, and daughter Cora, to Kendall. Most letters are multiple pages. Highly unusual to have both sides of correspondence. Content includes the usual family health situations (mother is quite ill) but also covers how the sons are doing in life, their financial status (sometimes poor), plans and hopes, etc. The other letters are from Manchester, Nashua, Townsend, Concord NH; Boston and Haverhill MA. Interesting that note from Knight in Massachusetts is addressed to Dr. Joseph P. Hale, Postmaster West Rumney asking him to ask his father to forward a trunk he had left behind. He also instructs him to tell his mother his health is good and goes on to say he is in Haverhill to buy stock for making shoes. The question is: why didn't he write directly to his parents? All letters are in good condition. Nice variety of post and rate marks. Some sent FREE . (Image1)
