1946 Operation Crossroads Atomic Bomb Test Cover. Addressed by Sgt. John B. Armstrong aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga to Los Angeles, Cal., franked with 1946, 6¢ Airmail tied by "U.S. Navy, Fleet Post Office, Jul 1, 1946" duplex with "Atomic Bomb Test, Bikini Atoll" slogan, with original enclosure regarding the postmark and bomb test…They told us yesterday that there would be a special postmark on the letters sent today so be sure and save the envelope. The cancellation will be a Atom Bomb drawing of some sort…Saturday morning around 6:00AM, weather permitting the A Bomb will be dropped the first.; included is Armstrong's "Joint Task Force One - Atomic Bomb Test" participation card and a news clipping of his death mentioning his participation in Operation Crossroads, Very Fine.

Operation Crossroads was a pair of nuclear weapon tests conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll in mid-1946. The first test was Able. The bomb was named Gilda after Rita Hayworth's character in the 1946 film Gilda, and was dropped from the B-29 Superfortress Dave's Dream of the 509th Bombardment Group on July 1, 1946.
