1916, 5¢ carmine error. Double error in block of four with normal 2¢ carmine (463) pair, tied by oval grid cancel duplexed with "Middlefield, Ohio, May 29, 1917" cds on cover to Cleveland Oh., Very Fine and scarce use.

ONE OF ONLY 9 RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 5¢ CARMINE PERF. 10 ERROR ON COVER. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED USE WITH THE DOUBLE ERROR.

This cover was used only one week after the earliest known use of May 22nd 1917. The cover offered here was not included in the September 1984 B.I.A. article by Larry Weiss, in which he records only eight covers bearing the 5c Carmine Perf 10 error. All of those are single error usages. Of the nine recorded, two were used significantly later in 1936 and one is a piece of a cover.

The 1917 50¢ stamp was produced for only a very short period. It was released three weeks before the new 1917 Perf. 11 issue and was only used for a short period before being replaced by the new issue.
