1836 PONY EXPRESS $1.50 DOUBLE RATE, SFL from New-Orleans on DEC20,1836 and addressed to New-York, routing 145 miles via coastal packet to Mobile-Alabama + Pony Express 1100 miles to Philadelphia + train to New York arriving DEC 30th, a letter with a check for $1987 was enclosed and charged the 2 sheet rate (2 x 75¢ per sheet), good letter content discuses payment options for cotton in either cash or cheese, an expensive but incredible 10 day delivery in 1836, the pony express operated for 36 months starting JUL,1836 and discontinued in JUL,1839 as the railways expanded and the USA went into the 1838 Dexpression, covers are greatly undervalued versus the Western Pony Express that operated for 18 months in APR,1860 to OCT,1861 when mail volume was more than triple the 1830's levels, VF est ($300+ US) (Image)
