1861 $5 The Bank of Philippi, (West) Virigina Obsolete Note1861 $5 The Bank of Philippi note from Philippi, (West) Virginia. This note grades Very Fine+ with some very faint paper folds, blank back as issued. Signed by proper authorities. An attractive green and black note issued just days after the beginning of the Civil War! Rare and early West Virginia small town currency note. The population was 2,966 at the 2010 census. In 1861, the city was the site of the Battle of Philippi, known as "The Philippi Races". Although a minor skirmish, this is considered the earliest notable land action of the American Civil War. This note was issued 30 days before that battle. Suggested bid $250 (Image)
