(Columbia River) on Board the Brig Sarah McFarland, Near the Mouth of Columbia River, Oct 17/49. Dateline on folded letter to Philadelphia, Pa., entering the mails with "San Francisco, Cal., Nov 27" cds and matching boxed "40" rate handstamp, with interesting enclosure of gentleman traveling to Oregon to settle in Williamette valley with a "few facts as they exist and to see what remedy can be made"…I shall first of all complain of the neglect to fulfill their contract, on the part of Messr Howland and Aspinwall, to carry the mail to Oregon, as they contract themselves only with reaping a harvest by bring passengers from Panama; by this neglect the mails lie at San Francisco, untill the first opportunity, also complaint regarding the Washington government in defining quantity official land settlers are entitled to, mention hardships in traveling overland, fighting Indians, mention in postscript mention a party being attacked by Digger Indians at the mouth of Rogue's River, Very Fine.

Ft. Laramie, O.R., July 1. Oregon Route cds with manuscript date on 1851 folded letter to Illinois, with matching "10" rate handstamp crossed out in red crayon and re-rated "5" for the first day of the new rate, with original trail letter enclosure with interesting content including…We have had one birth & one death in our companySoon after we left the States we had some trouble with the indians of the Pawnee tribe. It took place on account of our company being too small., F.-V.F.

THE EARLIEST KNOWN EXAMPLE OF THE FORT LARAMIE OREGON ROUTE POSTMARK USED ON FIRST DAY OFFICIAL THE NEW RATES.

A Post Office at Fort Laramie on the Oregon Route or Oregon Trail across the plains was established in 1850. The Post Office was located in unorganized territory but attached to Oregon Territory for administrative purposes and was the last Post Office on the Oregon Trail going west.

The addressee, Mrs. John Dickson, was the widow of a hunter involved in establishing the Hudson Bay Company in the territory. He was encountered by Lewis & Clark and is mentioned in their journals.
