"Cincinnati 1st June 1801" (Northwest Territory). Manuscript postmark with matching "17" rating on folded ALS of Daniel Symmes to Capt. William Clark, Louisville Ky. concerning land transaction, postscript note on flap "As Uncle William wished to hear from family before his departing probably you had best see the contents of this letter"; worn folds, F.-V.F.

William Clark was an American explorer, soldier, Indian agent, and territorial governor. A native of Virginia, he grew up in pre-statehood Kentucky before later settling in what became the state of Missouri. Along with Meriwether Lewis, Clark helped lead the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803 to 1806 across the Louisiana Purchase to the Pacific Ocean, and claimed the Pacific Northwest for the United States.

Reddish-brown scalloped rim stencil postmark with red manuscript date and matching "37½" rating on 1832 folded letter to Cincinnati Oh., letter turned upon arrival with Cincinnati Oct. 22nd cds back to Coshocton; cover edge faults and edge tears affect marking, still a Very Fine and choice strike of this rare fancy stencil postmark.
