Very fine strike type II straightline postmark (manuscript day) with with manuscript "1oz" rating and "24" rate for 4-times the 6¢ per ¼ oz. rate under 30 miles on 1834 folded wrapper to Tallahassee; large "PAID" handstamp above manuscript "by L Read Esq" with both surrounded by a manuscript box, faint Tallahassee oval receiver, Fine and most unusual, ex-Light.

Pensacola / 9. Sep. Type II manuscript postmark and manuscript "25" rate on 1822 folded letter to Philadelphia; some cover splitting and paper tape reinforcement, Fine, the earliest recorded example of the type II manuscript postmark, ex-Meroni, Light.

Interesting content regarding the yellow fever, "We are up to our eyes in the yellow fever, Pensacola the Montpelier of the Gulph for health, is most terribly scourged. Half of the dennizens are dead including Dr. Bronaugh and the other half have fled …we are now 5 miles from town on the sea shore where we will remain until first frost".

This manuscript postmark is believed to have resulted from the temporary relocation of the Pensacola post office during this outbreak of yellow fever.

The Port Leon post office name was changed to New Port on Jan 18, 1844. That, together with the fact that no type III Port Leon postmarks are recorded after Dec 12, 1842, indicate that the docketing may possibly be incorrect.
