Readable strike homemade postmark ties 3¢ dull red (26) horizontal pair on blue cover from the Porter correspondence to his wife in New York City; left 3¢ short perf not mention on cert, Very Fine example of this Utah Territory use, ex-Haas, with 1993 P.F. certificate.

This new handmade townmark for Camp Floyd was made in early 1859.

Cds with matching cancel ties 2¢ red brown (210) on cover to Englewood, Ill., original "Southwestern Mining Co." letterhead enclosure datelined "Ell Derado Canon, May 16, 1886" to his daughter, mentions extreme heat over 100°, no news from steamer and some mining info; reduced slightly at left, F.-V.F. and rare mining town use.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

El Dorado Canon, Nevada was one of only a handful of southern Nevada post offices in the 1800s. Located on the Colorado River below the present site of the Hoover Dam, the area was part of Lincoln County until Clark County was established in 1909.

"Marietta Northwest Territory, Dec. 14, 1788". Datelined folded letter to Rhode Island endorsed "pr favour of Col. Sproat", carried via courier service out of North West Territory, and privately to Rhode Island; edge faults and folds separated, Fine, ex-Siskin, Kramer.

THE EARLIEST RECORDED LETTER FROM NORTHWEST TERRITORY IN PRIVATE HANDS.

Ebenezer Sproat was a Continental Army officer, son-in-law of famed Revolutionary War Navy Commodore Abraham Whipple, and a pioneer in Ohio Country. He was a founder of Marietta, Ohio, the first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory founded in April of 1788. Starting in July 1788, Colonel Sproat provided the only courier service to and from Marietta. This letter was carried on the second trip.

Cds with matching fancy "Paid 10" rating handstamp on 1862 datelined folded letter to Society Hill S.C., excellent war contents concerning the Battle of Elkhorn (Pen Ridge) reading: "We has lost a great many brave men from this part of the state. The battle in North West Ark was a poor thing. We only lost about 80 men in killed & 3 or 400 in wounded and prisoners. The enemy acknowledge a loss of 900 killed and 1400 wounded. McCullough was killed by sharp shooters. McIntosh was killed in a charge. If Van Dorn had fought them one hour longer he would have captured all the northern army. His retreat is a perfect mystery to all troops…The curse Van Dorn universally."; some edge wear, Very Fine and excellent Battle of Elkhorn content letter.
