A REMARKABLE USE OF THE CHARLESTON 5¢ PROVISIONAL STAMP DURING THE TEMPORARY REGULAR ISSUE SHORTAGE OF JUNE 1862.

This late use of the Charleston postmaster provisional stamp was used just ten days prior to the general postage rate increase to a standard 10¢ regardless of distance. Apparently due to a temporary shortage of Confederate stamps in Charleston at this time, Postmaster Huger brought out supplies of the now obsolete provisionals and placed them on sale. Indistinct red cancellation which appears to be an Harnden's Express cancel, full well balanced margins especially for this tight margined issue, Very Fine and choice, certificates states the cancel is a town cancel, however Fredericksburg never used a red cancellation during the Provisional period, with 2010 & 2017 P.F. certificates.

THE LARGEST RECORDED USED MULTIPLE OF ANY NASHVILLE PROVISIONAL.

Captain Daniel Coleman (1821-1905) was born in Pittsylvania County, October 31, 1821, near Spring Garden, Va. and was the son of the late Col. Daniel Coleman, the chief justice of the county and a former member of the state legislature. He grew up in the farming business. At the opening of the Civil War enlisted in the Spring Garden Blues, Eighteenth Virginia Regiment. Prior to the war he was the Captain of a militia company. He served throughout the entire struggle, and in one of the closing battles was shot through his face, a scar from which he carried all of his life. He was also an honored member of the legislature.
