Barton, Clara (American Nurse, founder of Red Cross, 1821-1912), January 13, 1894 ALS, addressed to E.B. Foster at the Weirsdale Orange Co., acknowledging the receipt of box of oranges, on American National Red Cross letterhead, folded for mailing, slight toning at the edges, three-hole punched at left, a copy of the 1948 Clara Barton stamp is hinged to the lower left. The envelope (also in Barton-+s hand) was postmarked in Beaufort, SC (Weirsdale, FL receiving mark on reverse), discoloration from tape at top, light red cachet reads -½Sea Island Relief / American National Red Cross / Washington, D.C. / Beaufort, S.C.-+rnThe Sea Islands hurricane struck Georgia and South Carolina in late August, 1893, killing an estimated 1,000-2,000 people. The Red Cross did not arrive in Georgia until October 1, more than a month after the hurricane made landfall. This was the Red Cross-+s first response to a hurricane, and Barton remained in the area until the summer of 1894, providing families with corn and bacon on a weekly basis. (Image)

Holtzclaw (director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing), thanking him for his work on the Project Mercury stamp, also includes postal bulletins regarding the release of the stamp, several other letters to Holtzclaw (including from Treasury Secretary Douglas Dillon and a facsimile of a letter from PMG J. Edward Day), a publicity photo of John Glenn with a sheet of the stamps, a photo essay signed by Charles R. Chickering (designer), Richard M. Bower (vignette engraver), and Howard F. Sharpless (letter/numeral engraver), a very neat lot for collectors of the Project Mercury stamp (Image)
