Wallace, Warrenton, Virginia, additional "Aldie, Va." manuscript and matching "Free", vert. file fold through "a" of "James", Very Fine.rnMonroe, one of the most versatile of the founding fathers, served in the Revolutionary War and was wounded at the Battle of Trenton. He served in the Continental Congress and one of Virginia's first Senators (1790-94). Washington appointed him Minister to France but was recalled for privately opposing Jay's Treaty with England. He was then Governor of Virginia (1799-1802) until Jefferson asked him to negotiate the Louisiana Purchase with France. He was then appointed by Jefferson as the Minister to Great Britain followed by a stint as Madison's Secretary of State and Secretary of War. Monroe was elected President in 1816 and re-elected unopposed in 1820, Monroe presided over the "Era of Good Feelings", bought Florida from Spain, and signed the Missouri Compromise but the highlight of his administration was the Monroe Doctrine, which warned Europe not to interfere in the Western Hemisphere, and is still invoked in the present day. rnThe addressee, Dr James Wallace, was born in 1769 and educated in Edinburgh, Scotland. Newton Pittsfield, Mass., cover silked on interior, Extremely Fine.rnSon of 2nd President John Adams, he served as the Minister to the Netherlands, Prussia, Russia and Great Britain, negotiated the Treaty of Ghent which ended the War of 1812and served as Pres Monroe's Secretary of State during his entire term in office. Historians generally concur that he was one of the greatest diplomats and secretaries of state in American history. In 1824, he ran against Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay, and though Jackson received more votes, the election was thrown into the House of Representatives. There, House Speaker Clay swayed members to vote for Adams, who then appointed Clay Secretary of State. Following his defeat in 1828, he was elected to the House of Representatives from Massachusetts, where he served from 1831 until his death.rnThe addressee, Edward Newton, was a businessman born in Nova Scotia who worked in the Far East who, upon returning to Pittsfield, became active in the local religious scene. rn (Image)

Merrill, Johnson signature with horizontal filing crease, Stanton signature with vertical fold through last "N" in Stanton, Very Fine document.rnAndrew Johnson, prior to serving as Lincoln's Vice President, served Tennessee in the House of Representatives and as Governor. He assumed the presidency after the assassination of Lincoln in 1865. He was unable to secure the nomination for the 1868 election, partly because he had alienated many politicians and the public. His attempt to fire Sec. of War Stanton led to his impeachment in the House, but was not convicted in the Senate. Returning to Tennessee after his presidency, Johnson sought political vindication, and gained it in his eyes when he was elected to the Senate again in 1875, making Johnson the only former president to serve in the Senate. He died just months into his term.rnEdwin Stanton (1814-69) was a lawyer and politician who served as Secretary of War under the Lincoln Administration during most of the American Civil War. After Lincoln's assassination, he remained as Secretary of War under the new President Andrew Johnson during the first years of Reconstruction. Stanton returned to law after retiring as Secretary of War, and in 1869 was nominated as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by Johnson's successor, Ulysses S. Grant; however, he died four days after his nomination was confirmed by the Senate. (Image)
