Experts are trying to solve the "what is it" question of this unusual cancel. We feel it is a crude negative "H", but others have suggested a mug. The recorded covers are from December 12 to December 14, 1872. Illustrated in Weiss NYFM on page 459.

Two strikes tie 10¢ brown (161), deep rich color, on blue 1874 folded cover to France, red "New-York Mar 21" exchange cds, this cover was carried on the French Line Pereire that arrived at Brest on Mar. 30th as indicated by the entry backstamp, black "5" decimes due handstamp, Brest (3.30) entry and Douarnenez (3.31) arrival backstamps, Very Fine, One of only two recorded examples of this unlisted NYFM killer.

This newly discovered NYFM was documented by Dan Richards in his article "NYFM Update, Part 2" (CC News, August 2011, p. 115). The two recorded covers were used on the same day, March 21, 1874. This cancel was unlisted by Weiss, but we have designated a Weiss number that corresponds to the design style.
