1793-94 Letters (no address panels) all concerned with intelligence and sending people secretly from the islands to the mainland to seek information from contacts previously made through trade and smuggling; information acquired convinced William Pitt to delay any invasion of France. The letters, mostly sent to the Earl Moira, written by the Governor of Jersey the 6th Earl Balcarres (8) concerning garrisoning the islands, rumours from France, French ships sighted near the islands, landing agents in France, etc., also letters from Col. Craig concerning a landing in France by the Royalist army (2), letters from Moira or Admiral MacBride (2), 1793 (Apr 16) note from Peter Le Mesurier in Alderney concerning a payment of £60.12.00 disbursed on government service and a similar 1794 (June 12) note from Thomas Sausmarez on Guernsey for £769.8.4 cash advance for secret services. All fifteen letters with full typed transcriptions, also a printed 1798 notice of islanders who have contributed funds for the government service. A fascinating and unique group. (16).
