1866 (Aug. 25) New York N.Y. to Furth, Bavaria. Estimate; $500 - 750.

The letter was properly paid for the 28¢ Prussian closed mail rate, but must have weighed just over ½ oz. Since 2 x 28¢ = 56¢ had not been paid for this route, the New York exchange office clerk sent the letter in the Bremen mail at two-times the 15¢ Bremen rate = 30¢ rate and accepted the 2¢ short payment. The New York marking shows a credit to Bremen of 2 x 12¢ = 24¢.
