Collection of Halifax Military Markings, 1940s to 1990, mostly all written-up on pages, with a description of the markings and their known time of use range, with F.M.O., Commanding Officer, NPO, M.P.O., Stadacona, CF10, CF19, CF22, and many more. 1942 Winnipeg to Kwangtung China, then Returned. Mailed Registered from Winnipeg Sub Post Office No. 4 on DEC 1.1941 and franked with a single $1 Chateau Ramezay, paying the 90c clipper rate plus the 10c registration fee. Arrived Vancouver a few days later (date of transit not clear), with MAIL SERVICE SUSPENDED handstamp in blue applied, as well as a censor tape (C.197) and a return to sender pointing finger. At some point a "passed for export" annotation was written in pen on front. Cover finally arrived back in Winnipeg on AUG.21.1942. Vertical and horizontal fold creases, as well as other small faults, still an interesting cover with a total of 10 c.d.s. cancels on back. Ex. Kalbfleisch. (Image)

Two SALVED FROM THE SEA Covers, the first being addressed to Egypt, with an Essex (GB) return address as well as a "Base Office Egypt" large double ring c.d.s. on back dated "1 AUG 44". The second was mailed from the Royal bank of Canada in Ottawa on MAY.27.1940 and addressed to "Col. The Honourable George P. Vanier, c/o the Canadian Legation, Paris France" Vanier was to become the Governor General of Canada. It is endorsed "S.S. Andania" (torpedoed west of the Faroes on June 16) but believed to have travelled on the S.S. Eros which was torpedoed near Ireland on June 7. There is a "No Service / Return to Sender" boxed handstamp as well as a SALVED FROM THE SEA handstamp on front. Accompanied by its contents (an bank receipt for a deposit) and by a detailed write-up by D. Lingard. Both covers have the usual small faults. (Image)

1948 Toronto to Tel Aviv, Israel, mailed Toronto (machine cancel dated JUN.21.1848) and addressed to Tel Aviv, franked with a 1c and a 4c War issue, paying the 5c UPU rate. There are two handstamps in purple: SERVICE SUSPENDED and RETURN TO SENDER. Very fine. (Image)

1940 Camp "F" Censored Cover, mailed Berlin on NOV.28.1940 and addressed to "Karl Behringer, German prisoner of War in Canada c/o Chief Postal Censor". The cover has two different censor tapes: a German one and two Canadian ones (Examiner 2555). Received at Base A.P.O. on MAR.12.1941 and sent to "Camp F (in red pencil). Also two red handstamps: a crown circular censor #14 and a "C/O THE DIRECTOR, / INTERNMENT OPERATION / OTTAWA, CANADA". Very fine. (Image)

1939 Kananaskis Internment Camp Cover, mailed on NOV.6.1939 from Seebe, Alberta, free-franked to Port Alberni, BC (arrived there NOV.9). Postmarked with the rare oval "Kananaskis Internment Camp / Seebe, P.O. Alberta / Postage Free / Censored By / Nov.7.1939". Light folds and creases, still a nice strike of this military postmark. Robinson exhibit) and in sleeves, with over two dozen stamps, several pieces and another seven entires. We note a good variety of camps and postmark types, including machines and scarce items (some priced as high as $50) with "Parc Savard", Valcartier (various), Vernon, Sussex, Niagara. Also includes a group of 15 mostly covers from the 1940s to about 1980 with various military postmarks including a large 'S.O.S. TO CANADA", MPO, CFPO, RCAF, and more. Nice lot and mostly very fine. 1917 Vimy Ridge Post Card, being an unmailed postcard reading "Auf Wiedersehn" (until we meet again) on the picture side, with a pencil message written in German on the message side, apparently "taken off a dead German Soldier after the battle ... by J. Bird of the 54th Kootenay Battalion" written in pen on the message side. The postcard has mud on it, described in pen as "Mud of Vimy Ridge Battle of Ap 9th 1917". John Bird (Reg. #443155) was born in Calthwaite, Cumberland England, and enlisted on NOV.1.1915 at Vernon Camp BC. Interesting. (Image)
