Two-line error postmark (Type III var.) and matching "10" rating handstamp on folded letter datelined "Renosa, Jan 5 1847" (actually 1848) to Attleborough, Bucks County, Pa., 2+ page interesting letter reading in part "…Our company still remains in this place, and has been for over 4 months. We get along with the people pretty well - so long an acquaintance having overcome in a measure the frea and repugnance which they had for all american Soldiers. which feelings were engendered by the disgraceful conduct of the first volunteers who came out Robbing plundering and violating the women of the towns and villages in their way through the country - …Our army on this line are doing nothing at present, more than occupying the posts along - so as to keep up the communications…And the feeling manifested in the Presidents message is not of a nature calculated to stay the hitherto successful tide of operations - but I am in hopes they will see their folly/ before long and accede to the terms offered them…"; some edge wear and toning, Fine and rare error postmark.

Worth with a large force of regulars have come down to near this place where they have formed a Camp called Palo Alto…The First Second & Third Infy. are at Tampico together with a Regiment of Artillery…" and continues with much military intelligence about troop movements etc., Very Fine.

Two-line postmark (type II) and matching roman numeral "X" rating handstamp on folded letter datelined "Puebla, Oct 26 - 1847" to Middletown N.J., letter with excellent military content reading "I have just time to say a few words - as a regiment marches this morning en route to Puebla & Capt. De Hart and some of the sick affairs go down without expecting to get to Vera Cruz en route home…The chances of his getting to Vera Cruz are however doubtful. Gen. Lane marched with about 1500 men last Thursday to Atlixco - the present seat of Government of the State of Puebla - He met the advanced guard of Gen. Rhea about five miles out from this place and attacked him defeating him with just slaughter - our loss was only 3 men wounded - one of whom has since died. The Mexicans kep up a running fight to Atlixco - after being drawn from their position. It is reported here among the Mexicans that their Congress in session at Toluca have sent for Mr. Trist - desiring to reopen negotiations for peace…", a Very Fine use with excellent war content.

Winfield Scott (1786-1866) was a United States Army General serving in the War of 1812, Mexican-American War and the Civil War, and an unsuccessful presidential candidate of the Whig Party in 1852. In 1855, by a special act of Congress, Scott was given a brevet promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General, making him only the second person in U.S. military history, after George Washington, to hold that rank.
