AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF THE 1853 5¢ KAMEHAMEHA III ISSUE PREPAYING HAWAIIAN POSTAGE ON COVER TO THE UNITED STATES.

This cover was carried on Her British Majesty's Frigate "Amphitrite" that departed Honolulu on Oct. 9th 1853 to San Francisco arriving Oct. 28th. It departed on the "California" on Nov. 1st to Panama arriving Nov. 17th. It was carried by USMSC "Illinois" from Aspinwall Nov. 19th to New York arriving Nov. 28th.

According to the Gregory census, this is the third earliest use of the 5¢ Kamehameha III Issue of 40 total covers. The two earlier covers are dated July 3rd and August 16th. Est. $5,000-7,500 (Image)

Hawaii, 1857, 5¢ manuscript surcharge on 13¢ dark red. Type I (Clark) numeral with long flag, large margins, vivid color on paper which has very slight overall toning, neat strike of San Francisco cds leaving surcharge fully visible, Extremely Fine, ex-Golden, with 2011 H.P.S. & 2016 P.F. certificates.

AN OUTSTANDING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5¢ ON 13¢ PROVISIONAL SURCHARGE.

The 5¢ provisional surcharge was necessary due to a shortage of 5c stamps just after the transition from Postmaster Whitney to Jackson. Most were made by Jackson's clerk, Alvah Clark, around the Start of 1857. New supplies of the 5c stamp (Scott No. 8) were received at the end of June 1857. Scott $10,000
