Confederacy, Adams Ex. Co., Louisville, Ky., Aug 2, 1861. Bold strike of cds on orange cover from the C.S.A. to Waterbury Conn. with manuscript "2/- C.H.P." express charge (two bits, or 25¢) - "C.H.P." are the initials of Charles H. Phelps and at the right "Confederacy Postage Paid 20c", bearing U.S. 3¢ dull red (26) vertical pair tied by two strikes of blue "Louisville Ky., Aug 3, 1861" duplex, forwarded upon arrival with "Waterbury Ct., Aug 9 1861" cds to Branford Point; backflap replaced improving top edge, Fine appearance, Unlisted in the Walske census.

Charles H. Phelps was the express company agent in Augusta, who was later prosecuted in Confederate District Court in Savannah for transporting letters in violation of the law.

Confederacy, Adams Southern Express. Imprint at top of orange cover bearing large margin 5¢ olive green (1c) tied by neat blue "Columbus, S.C., Jan 9" cds to Leesville S.C., Extremely Fine, with 2000 P.S.E. certificate.

A lovely cover with "Adams" crossed out and "Co." added by pen due to the fact that the Adams firm was now under the control of the Southern Express Company.
