United States & Canada Express, Fiske & Co., Brattleboro, Vt. Large black on orange express label, some oxidizing, usd on orange buff legal-size cover with "Paid B" rating to Boston, Mass.; reduced slightly at right, F.-V.F. and scarce Vermont express label use.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

Company was established by a circa 1855 merger of Fiske & Co. and Cheney & Co. Apparently it operated two divisions, one with Fiske & Co., proprietors, the other with Cheney, Fiske & Co., proprietors. Exact sequence of mergers for this tree of expresses is presently unknown because of lack of documentation and scarcity of 1840s covers.

Unites States Express Co. was established in the 1850s and expanded to serve much of the mid-west.

It appears that both labels have a similar border-style and therefore were produced by same printer.

Livingston, Wells & Co. became part of Wells & Co. in about 1848, retaining the previous head office at 159 Main Street, Buffalo. Their routes included upstate and western New York. They operated on the seven railroads which became the New York Central.

The schooner was named after Sir John Beverley Robinson, who became Attorney General of Upper Canada in 1813 and became Chief Justice and Speaker of the Legislative Council in 1829.

Black on white oval label used on reverse of cover with embossed "Henry Forester & Co., Brazil" sender's oval to Lanman & Kemp, New York, although endorsed "Per Merrimack", letter was refused by Brazilian post office for lack of postage (manuscript notation on reverse), received as private ship letter in Philadelphia by Westergaard, entered mails with "Philad'a Pa. Jan 17" cds and matching bold "Ship" and "Ship 12" in circle handstamps for double-rate ship letter beyond port of entry; some small opening tears, opened for display on three sides, otherwise Very Fine and unique Westergaard label use.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

Letter written at Pemambuco Brazil, sent privately to Philadelphia after being refused by Brazil post office for lack of postage (manuscript notation) - Received as private ship letter by Westergaard who applied SHIP AGENTS forwarder label - Philadelphia SHIP 12 in circle for double rate letter sent beyond the port of entry (private ship letter rate from 1863) - U.S. government mail to New York.
