James Hazen Clement was born in Haverhill September 14 1822. When eighteen years old he went to Lowell and drove a stage between that city and Salem. He afterwards purchased the line and added another stage line between Lowell and Framingham which was continued until the Stony Brook railroad was built. He then went to Milford, Massachusetts and engaged in the express business with Boston over the Albany railroad. At the same time he ran a stage line between Milford and several neighboring towns. (Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts, page 853, William R. Cutter).
