(Hand-Illustrated) Cover Front Scrap Book, 1916-19. Group of 14 used 1916-19 stamped cover fronts posted mostly from Brooklyn N.Y. pasted into scrapbook with fancy addresses and featuring playful sketches and Mc Cready characters incorporated into Reeves' lettering, some multicolor, also includes some unused envelopes and original artwork, along with photos and paper clippings, put together by wife of Artist A. Houghton Reeves addressed to her in Oyster Bay, N.Y. while her husband worked in Brooklyn N.Y., some interesting scenes like stereotypical depiction of an African American subject galloping on a donkey; man running away from a snake (possibly the artist); rabbits dancing under the sunshine while a man watches through a spyglass, etc., Very Fine and unusual.

(Propaganda) Cheap Inland and Ocean Postage. Illustrated Barnabas Bates Postage Reform Propaganda cover showing Steamship, Eagle with Shield & Steam Engine, manuscript "Flushing, Mich., July 9th" postmark with "Paid 3" rating crossed out and updated to unpaid "5" cents to Sherfall N.Y., ornate imprint of "D. Felt & Hosford, Stationers" on reverse; faulty and flaps mostly separated, Fine and scarce design.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

In the 1850s, Bates adopted the Elihu Blurritt practice of using illustrated envelopes to further his reform proposals for America. Paradoxically, this cover was sent to a member of House of Representatives under the Congressman's franking privilege to receive his mail free of postage.

Allover illustrated Valentine design with flags altered (American version), on cover franked with manuscript canceled 1851, 3¢ dull red, matching manuscript "Ogunguit, Me., Jan 31" postmark at top left, addressed to "Larince" (Lawrence) Mass., Very Fine, an attractive example of this Valentine peace design.

Soon after the British design appeared in the U.S., a new design was being sold in America. Here, the British flag was transferred to the right of the standing figure and an American flag was substituted for the original British one to the left of the figure.
