THIS IS THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE OF THE RARE 1¢ ON 2¢ WASHINGTON D.C. SURCHARGE POSTAL CARD ISSUE.

The "1 Cent" one-line surcharge die was prepared and only used at Washington D.C. The surcharge was deemed to be unsatisfactory, and was immediately withdrawn from use. Subsequent surcharges contained the numeral "1" above "Cent" in a two-line configuration.

THE ONLY RECORDED DIE ESSAY FOR THE 1952 2¢ CARMINE POSTAL CARD.

This essay is dated 1918 because the 2¢ Lincoln card was prepared in 1918 to be using during the wartime 2¢ postage rate but was never issued due to low demand. It wasn't until 1952 when the domestic postage rate increased from 1¢ to 2¢ that the card was issued.
