1916, 30¢ orange red, unwatermarked, perf 10. Position 51 from the plate no. "6917" sheet, o.g., never hinged (slight gum blemish), natural s.e. at left, wide margins and rich deep color, Very Fine. Scott No. 476A; $4,250 for the grade of fine.
A LOVELY EXAMPLE OF THE 30¢ PERF 10 WASHINGTON-FRANKLIN ISSUE ON UNWATERMARKED PAPER FROM ONE OF THE TWO CERTIFIED SHEETS OF 100.
It is believed that the Scott 476A came into existence during the transition from gauging perforation 10 to 11 and the use of the new unwatermarked paper. Although the Bureau does not record producing such an issue, it is evident that at least three different unwatermarked sheets where used, creating the 209 issued stamps (top right pane of 100 from plate #6911, bottom right pane of 100 from plate #6917, two left sheet margin blocks of 4 and a bottom margin single from plate #6914. The far majority of these stamps are off-centered and is the reason for the Scott catalog valuation in the grade of fine. US$0 (Image)

1920, 2¢ deep rose, type Ia, unwatermarked, imperf. Wavy line machine cancel, showing Schermack type III perforations in right margin, margins to slightly in at left, rich distinctive deep rose color, Fine, with 1975 P.F. certificate. Scott No. 482A; $65,000.
A HANDSOME EXAMPLE OF THE 1920 2¢ TYPE IA IMPERFORATE WITH SCHERMACK TYPE III PRIVATE PERFORATIONS.
Scott 482A was issued imperforate by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and sold to the Schermack Company for use in its patented stamp-affixing machines. The Schermack "Sealer and Stamper" machine typically applied stamps one at a time, and, in most cases, the hyphen-hole perfs on one side would be cut off as a result of the cutting blade not aligning with the space between stamps. The release of imperforate sheets printed from the experimental Type Ia plates escaped the notice of contemporary collectors, resulting in a very small survival rate. US$0 (Image)

1917, 5¢ carmine color error, unwatermarked, imperf. The single error in a block of 6, o.g., lightly hinged, large margins, rich vibrant color on fresh paper, Very Fine and choice, with 1982 P.F. certificate. Scott No. 485; $10,000 for single.
AN EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE OF THE 1917 5¢ CARMINE COLOR ERROR IN A BLOCK OF 6.
While producing the 2¢ plate "7942", during one of the inspections it was noted that three positions in the plate were not satisfactory and needed to be burnished out and re-entered. The transfer roll for the 5¢ stamp was mistakenly used with the error passing through production unnoticed, with the error sheets released in perf. 10 (467), perf. 11. (505) and a limited number imperf. (485). US$0 (Image)
