Cat No:Collection
245, 1893 $5 Black, lower right corner with full corner sheet margins, visually perfect centering, intense shade and proof-like impression,o.g., lightly hinged, perfs between stamp and selvage at right are slightly reinforced, a small natural wood fiber inclusion only visible on back, small thin spot at extreme edge of right selvage -- none of these have any bearing on the stamps grade. This $5 Columbian featuring a portrait of Christopher Columbus is considered to be one of the key stamps for any United States collection and for some collections, the very pinnacle their collection. When issued in 1893, this was the highest denomination and first $5.00 United States stamp. When adjusted for inflation, this stamp had well over $125 face value. Due to the high total face value of the dollar value Columbians, not many of these stamps were saved, even less so in mint condition. 1993 PF and 2005 PSE graded Superb 98 certificates. One of only 3 known and this is the first stamp to achieve thislofty top grade (SMQ $17,500)(Image)
