1873, 1¢ Brown on Shades of Greenish Cards, Trial Color Plate Proofs. Set of six different, most with toning on face due to mounting, Fine and scarce set. Scott No. UX3TC.
USPCC No. S2TCm-r; $1,500.

During May, 1874, and probably spread over a period into early 1875, the Morgan Envelope Co., acting under orders of the Post Office Department, produced a number of proofs on a variety of differently colored card stock, all without watermark. These were produced with the regular 36-subject plate forms and usually in the normal color ink. It is, however, generally believed that the card stock used would have been much smaller, resulting in a printing using only a portion of the printing form.
