One who realizes how important it may be to have letters forwarded immediately, has placed the necessary stamps upon this letter. To repay him, please send stamps of equal value, addressed to Box 582, Newark N.J.", Good Samaritan applied additional overlapped franking of two 2¢ brown (113) singles and 10¢ green, F. Grill (96), tied by "Newark N.J." duplex with donut cancel, endorsed per "Steamer 'Hy Chauncey' ", partial strike of New York "24" credit handstamp off bottom edge, "A, Panama, JU9 69" transit cds, Lima 1869 arrival backstamp; edge wear and small piece out at bottom, small stamp flaws, Fine, ex-LeBow.
Scott No. 96; Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

A RARE NEWARK N.J. GOOD SAMARITAN LABEL USE ON FOREIGN MAIL.

The 34¢ treaty rate to Peru by American packet to Panama, then British packet to destination was effective from October 1, 1867 to March 31, 1870. The sender mailed this cover with only 20¢ in postage and the Good Samaritan applied the 14¢ deficiency hoping the receiver would reimburse them the postage, and maybe some extra for their generosity. This was probably a risky proposition on mail destined abroad.
