1861, 3¢ rose (Scott 65), lightly tied by a target cancel on a 3¢ "Star Die" entire (U26) to New York City postmarked with a partial New Orleans double circle datestamp and a perfect strike of the rare "ILLEGAL STAMP" straightline handstamp with no indication of what the illegal stamp may have been - presumably a 3¢ 1857 - nor any trace of where it had been affixed; the cover and stamp are damaged at the lower left and a piece (the name of the sender?) has been cut out of the back; nonetheless, an exceedingly rare usage of the New Orleans ILLEGAL STAMP marking - fewer than 10 examples are recorded - and a true philatelic mystery,

According to Simpson, New Orleans used this marking beginning in December 1863
