1851, 1¢ blue, type II. Vertical strip of three, position 11-21-31L1E, beautiful color, large margins, tied by bold strikes of New York square grid cancels, matching bold strike of red "New-York, Jul 23" cds on blue 1851 folded letter to Newport R.I.; bottom stamp creased from fold, otherwise fresh and Very Fine appearance.

Tied by "Stockton Cal., Jan 12" csd on yellow Merriam business correspondence use to Springfield Mass., buff "Per Overland Mail Via Los Angeles" illustrated six-horse stagecoach design cut-out with Kierski & Bros. Booksellers Stockton Cal. imprint pasted on upper left corner, reverse with red and black illustrated Kierski & Brother Book Sellers ad showing book press, books etc.; flap torn with bit of paper loss, 10¢ trivial toned perf, Very Fine.

A REMARKABLE "PER OVERLAND VIA LOS ANGELES" ILLUSTRATED STAGECOACH PASTE-UP COVER, THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS IMPRINT.

Kierski & Bros. of Stockton Cal. probably printed a sheet of this illustrated Overland Mail six-horse stagecoach design directive to cut out and paste on their existing illustrated advertising envelopes. An unusual use that we have not previously recorded.
