1851, 1¢ blue, type I. Position 7R1E, light large Boston "Paid" in grid cancel, full balanced margins with scrolls at top and bottom clear and showing the complete design, rich bold "Paris Blue" color and an unusual slight double kiss impression at top, completely sound and fault-free, Very Fine, ex-K. Burroughs and J. Rose, signed S. Ashbrook, with 1999 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 5; $55,000.

A WONDERFULLY CHOICE SOUND USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 1¢ TYPE I ISSUE FROM POSITION 7 ON THE RIGHT PANE OF PLATE ONE EARLY - ONE OF THE FEW SOUND EXAMPLES SHOWING THE COMPLETE DESIGN.

According to the Jerome S. Wagshal census of the Scott #5 (this example being 5-CAN-010) there are only 98 examples in all recorded. This example is one of a small handful of examples showing the complete design and one of a few also in sound condition. The unusual dark Plate 1E color was coined "Paris Blue" by Stanley B. Ashbrook who has sign this this stamp in pencil on reverse.

Ashbrook on reverse and stating "Single on Cover - Much More Rare Than Strip of Three ", ex-Kapiloff.
Scott No. 5A; $15,500.

AN EXTREMELY RARE SOLO CIRCULAR RATE USAGE OF THE 1851 1¢ TYPE IB FROM POSITION 6R1E - ONE OF THE TWO BEST POSITIONS.

Type Ib is distinguished by showing complete design at top and nearly complete design at bottom. All Type Ib stamps are very scarce, and the two best examples (8R and 6R offered here) are rare.

A RARE EARLY 1851 ISSUE TRANSATLANTIC USE TO RUSSIA.

William Louis Winans was a noted railway pioneer, who, with his brother, traveled to Russia in 1843 as part of a $3 million contract to supply railroad locomotives and cars for the new railroad between St. Petersburg and Moscow. From 1852, William was the chief manager of the Russian operation, which had a lucrative contract for making and maintaining running stock for the growing Russian railroad network--it was reported their contracted fees were 17 times higher than in any other country in Europe. During the Crimean War the firm's operations expanded, and Winans acted as the U.S. vice-consul in St. Petersburg. The contract expired in 1862, and Winans left Russia for London a millionaire.

THE LARGEST RECORDED MULTIPLE OF THE 1851 10¢ TYPE I IMPERFORATE ISSUE AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEMS FOR THE ISSUE.

The discovery of this strip was first reported in the August 30, 1941 edition of "Stamps" magazine. Found by Pasadena, Cal. stamp dealer Alexander D. Gage as part of a group of six strips of 5 of the 10¢ imperforates affixed to a May 30, 1857 letter from Sacramento, Cal. to an eastern publisher for payment of a subscription. The publisher returned stamps to the sender with a note that they where unusable due to the stamps being stuck down and asked for currency for the payment.

1857, 1¢ blue, type III. Position 99R2, exceptionally well centered within large margins clearly showing design characteristics at top and bottom; tiny tear at top right, rare and Extremely Fine appearance, with 2010 P.F. & P.S.E. certificates.
Scott No. 21; $8,000.

IN OUR OPINION, THIS IS THE FINEST APPEARING EXAMPLE WITH SUPERB CENTERING OF ONLY APPROXIMATELY 20 KNOWN PERFORATED 1857 1¢ TYPE III STAMPS FROM POSITION 99R2.

Plate 2 was made in late 1855, and consists of 198 stamps that are Type II, one position that is Type III (99R2) and one that is Type IIIA (100R2). Plate 2 stamps are rarer perforated than in imperforate form. Most perforated examples of position 99R2 have perforations cutting into the design on at least one side. The example offered here remarkably shows all design characteristics perfectly.

Type III is defined by breaks in the outer lines at both top and bottom. Many Type III stamps have breaks that were created or enlarged by plate wear. Since the wear occurred over a period of time, the majority of stamps of this type (both unused and used) has small breaks in at least one line. The most notable exception is Position 99R2. According to the Neinken book, "The 99R2 stamp is a fresh entry, that was short transferred both at top and bottom, over an original entry that had been erased… The reason that 99R2 is the finest example of Type III is because of its very short transfer at top and at bottom, giving us the wide breaks in these lines." (p. 184).
