Straightline two-line date stamp (LOS-630) tying 1887, 5¢ indigo, two singles (s.e.'s at right) on cover to Kingstown, Ireland, New York transit and receiving backstamp, accompanied by second cover from correspondence dated April 2, 1889 bearing second type cds (LOS-610), with interesting docketing regarding transit times, a Very Fine duo.

(Los Angeles) Elk's Parade R.P.O., Los Angeles, Cal. Jul 16 1909 Tr. 99. Purple cds duplexed with scarab cancel ties 1¢ Franklin on multicolor "Making Hogs of Themselves" post card to Moody Texas; some wear and creases, Very Fine, this is The Discovery Example of This Parade RPO.

On July 16, 1909, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks held a parade in Los Angeles Cal. As a part of the parade, an R.P.O. car was loaned by the U.S. Post Office and staffed by members of the local Railway Post Office Clerk's Association. See Joseph Horn's article "A Special Event - A Very Special R.P.O. Postmark" in The Transit Postmark Collector (Jul.-Aug. 1999) pages 84-85.

The Santa Ana post office opened on July 5th of 1870. Cover addressed to Dr. Flint in Monterey County, the owner of the land grant that today makes up a large part of Southern Orange County.

(Los Angeles) Tejon, Cal., Nov 20, 1857. Manuscript postmark (LOS-14670, R7) on manuscript canceled 1855, 10¢ Nesbitt entire to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs J.W. Denver in Washington D.C., with original enclosure from James R. Vineyard datelined "Sebastian Sm'l Reverse, Tejon, Nov 17, 1857", Very Fine.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF A TOWNMARK FROM TEJON, CALIFORNIA.

A post office was established at Tejon in July of 1857 at the site of the Sebastian (or Tejon) Indian Reservation (the first Indian reservation in California established in 1853) with Colonel James R. Vineyard as the resident agent at that time. The post office was moved six miles north in 1859 to Sinks.

Manuscript postmark (LOS-15800, R5) on cover to Portland, Me., franked with manuscript canceled 1861, 3¢ rose; sealed cover opening tear at upper right, otherwise Very Fine, the earliest and only recorded manuscript postmark used shortly before the arrival of the first type handstamp.

Wilmington, named for it's Delaware counterpart, was founded by Phineas Banning (known for his illustrated stagecoach handstamp) as a terminus for his freight and stage business.
