Steel harpoon (27cm long) with a lead point, engraved "40170 REWARD FOR RETURN TO DISCOVERY, BRITISH MUSEUM (NAT HISTORY) LONDON. 40170", fired with a powder gun into live whales during research cruises, intended to be returned to the British Museum when a whale was subsequently caught to provide information on whale movements. An unusual item, first used by the Discovery Expedition (hence the name) in 1901-04 and used until the 1970s.
